Adult Education - Jewish How-Tos, or "How Do You Jew?"

The TBS Basic Judaism class for adults this fall was a great success, and so Rabbi Apothaker and Nancy Shiimer Heiden will be teaching some additional classes during the months of January and February. Students can choose between attending class on Sunday mornings at 9:00 or Tuesday evenings at 7:30. These classes will focus on practical issues concerning Jewish practice, such as how to pay a condolence call, how to lift and dress the Torah scroll during a Saturday service, and how to choose a Hebrew name. Anyone may join these classes; there is no prerequisite. For more information please call Nancy at 855-4882.

Some Points To Note...

  • For your convenience, we encourage everybody to use your credit cards for end of year payments. Many of you already have credit cards on file with us, and those have been run; for those of you who don't, please contact Jo Valentine-Cooper or Jim Green at the Temple Office (855-4882) to make a payment.

  • If you have not given to the TBS Annual Appeal Drive and would like to before the end of the year, please mail in a check (or call with a credit card number) to the Temple or give Jim Green a call at the Temple office for more details (855-4882). Thanks for your support.

  • Third Friday "Meet Me for Shabbat Dinner" will be at Asian Gourmet and Sushi Bar in Stoneridge Shopping Center, January 21st 6 PM. Bring a Friend! We'd love to have everyone join us for services following dinner. Consider attending; these are fun and delicious happenings!
  • Yahrzeit Plaques are always available. Please call JoAnne Grossman (236-8453) or Jim Green (855-4882) for more information.

  • Don't forget the TBS Trip to Israel! It'll be June 20-29, 2005. Contact Marcie Golden (239-0424) for details.

  • Did You Know... that it is part of B'nei Mitzvah etiquette to invite your child's entire Hebrew school class to your event?

  • We are in great need of speakers and microphones for use in the sanctuary. Please notify Jim Green (855-4882, jgreen@tbethshalom.org) if you might have something fairly new in good shape.

"Building Our Home Campaign" Donor Board To Be Finalized Shortly!

Next week will be the LAST WEEK to double-check the "Building Our Home Campaign, June 1989-April 1997" donor board. As of January 1, 2005, the board will be in production. We are looking forward to celebrating its completion.

Please contact Joyce Bronstein (939-9085) or JoAnne Grossman (236-8453) with any changes that may be necessary. Thank you.

Winter Break – Help Needed!

Come in from the cold and stay nice and warm in the temple office. Due to both office staff and regularly scheduled volunteers taking time off over break we will be needing some short term office volunteers at TBS from Monday Dec 20 through Friday Dec 31.

This is an ideal mitzvah for a high school or college student. They will be answering the phone and doing light office work. There will be some down time, so it will provide them with a quiet place to study.

If you think you might go a little stir crazy - recovering from the holidays, kids home, relatives visiting, etc. - then the office could be a nice break in your day.

If you have time off over break from your job and you normally cannot volunteer at TBS due to your regular work hours, this is an ideal time to offer a little help.

This would provide a needed service at TBS at a critical time. Please contact Maureen Emoff, Volunteer Coordinator (855-9647, maureen350@aol.com) and we will be happy to schedule a few hours for you. THANK YOU!

Sunday Morning Office Volunteers Needed!

This is a fun, easy way to give of your time to TBS. We need people to staff the TBS office on Sunday mornings during religious school. This is a great opportunity for people that are unable to volunteer during the week due to their work schedule. It is also a good time to meet other members. You will be answering the phones, and assisting Nancy Heiden and Lynn Tallan with copying, stuffing envelopes etc.

One Sunday a month would be a wonderful help. You can work the whole morning 9-1 or an 2 hour shift. Please contact Maureen Emoff, Volunteer Coordinator (855-9647, maureen350@aol.com) if this interests you. Thank you!

Car Donations-Benefiting TBS and You

We have just formed a new partnership with the local Volunteers of America. If you were thinking about donating a car to a charitable organization we have got the answer for you! By donating a car to Volunteers of America you will receive the full tax benefit (nice, with the end of the year approaching) and Temple Beth Shalom will receive 50% of whatever the Volunteers of America receives for the car. This is a real mitzvah. We have already had one car donated! If you would like more information contact Jim Green (855-4882, jgreen@tbethshalom.org).
