Upcoming Events!

WBS Lunch and Learn (Tue. Sep. 16)

Lunch and Learn will be held on Tuesday, September 16 at noon. It’s a great time to meet with one or both of our rabbis to talk about a selection from “10 Minutes of Torah”. Contact Hilda Glazer at hglazer@sbcglobal.net if you’d like to receive a monthly e-mail with the selection.

Sushi and Selichot Movie Night (Sat. Sep. 20)

Attention 20s and 30s Young Adults! Do you like Sushi? Do you like movies? Do you like the High Holy Days? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, join us for Sushi and Selichot Movie Night on Saturday, September 20th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Rabbi Benjy Bar-Lev's house (near Meijer in the Gahanna / New Albany Area). Join other young adults for an evening of delicious sushi, good conversation and a great movie. We will eat sushi, do a brief Havdalah service and watch Will Farrell in the 2006 movie, Stranger than Fiction. Come and meet some new and fun young Jews in the Columbus / New Albany area. It will be a great way to start the High Holy Day season! No Jewish knowledge necessary!

Please RSVP to Rabbi Benjy at Temple Beth Shalom by September 17th (614 855-4882, rabbibenjy@tbsohio.org, or message to "Benjy Bar-Lev" on Facebook)

WBS Wine And Chocolate Tasting (Thu. Sep. 25)

The first social event of the year for WBS will be wine and chocolate tasting at Sher Bliss Wine and Chocolate Shop on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00pm. The owner, Cheryl Sher, will discuss the marriage between wine and chocolate which was her vision long before it was popular. Better yet, we'll be tasting the two together! We will be tasting wine produced by female owned wineries and chocolate made right in the chocolate shop. Cost is $7 for WBS members and $14 for non-members. Your check is your reservation; send it to the TBS office ATTN: Women of Beth Shalom.

TBS Member Rolf Kaufman to Speak on Frankfurt's Program to Combat Anti-Semitism (Fri. Sep. 26)

Temple Beth Shalom member Rolf Kaufman, who fled the Nazis with his family, will speak at the Selichot-themed Friday night service on September 26 at 8 pm. He will be discussing both his Holocaust experiences and an innovative program he took part in in Frankfurt, Germany. The city regularly invites Holocaust survivors born in Frankfurt to take part in an all-expenses-paid visit that is part of their efforts to educate Germans about the Holocaust and prevent Anti-Semitism. May 22 through June 5, 2008, Kaufman visited Frankfurt and participated in the program. He says the theme of his talk will be a life lesson passed along to him from his father: that people have to be taught to hate, it is not something we are born doing.

B'nai Brith Co-Ed Bowling League (Tue. mid-Oct)

We are beginning to fill up spots for our B'nai Brith Co-Ed Bowling League. We bowl every Tuesday evening at the Gahanna Lanes from mid-October until March. The teams consist of four people and you can either sign up by yourself or with a team. No experience is needed! This is a fun, social, and Jewish bowling league for adults (21+). If you would like more information, please contact Bethany at bethanycarron@hotmail.com or 578-0355.

In Other News...

  • Recently we've made a variety of changes to our TBS website. These include an extended Temple Calendar and new "Who We Are" info! Check it out at http://www.tbsohio.org/ and let us know what you think. You can send feedback to listening@tbsohio.org or via the "Contact Us" form on the site.

Facilities Master Plan Questionnaire (Due Sun. Sep. 7)

Questionnaires were mailed to all congregants this week as part of the Temple Beth Shalom Facilities Master Planning project. Facilities Needs Assessment and Master Planning is a process of evaluating our current building and grounds, assessing the short and long term maintenance and growth requirements for our congregation and putting together a plan to meet those needs. A complete description of the process is included with the questionnaire mailing and also will be published in the September Window. The questionnaire can also be filled out online on the TBS website at http://tbsohio.org/survey/. Questionnaires are due no later than September 7, 2008. Please take a minute to provide your input!

Now Available: "Cafe Beit Shalom"

We are proud to make available "Cafe Beit Shalom" in the Temple mezzanine area, open anytime during Temple hours. There's fresh Seattle's Best coffee available, free WiFi internet access, and several newspapers (including the Sunday New York Times). The environment is geared towards parents whose children are in Talmud Torah Sunday School, but all are welcome anytime the Temple is open.

Make A Difference... Share Your Smile... Usher at the High Holy Days

What can you do to assist us in having the best High Holy Day Services ever? Join the Temple Beth Shalom Usher Corps. Every year we continue the tradition of keeping our Temple a warm and welcoming place by meeting and greeting our guests at the front door of our temple on ALL the High Holy Day services. We also do our best to accommodate our growing population at services by assisting in seating at our services. There is lots of help needed, and you can make a real difference! Join me in the corps by sending an email to Marc Ankerman (ats@insight.rr.com) which indicates your interest in helping the cause. We really appreciate your support, as do the many members and guests who join us during the High Holy Days. We will have a brief (very brief) meeting before the actual Holidays to go over the details. Send your email today - you will be making a difference in the service and for your Temple.

Rosh HaShanah Kiddush - Tradition! Tradition!

We invite all Temple members to participate in some way to help support the Rosh HaShanah kiddush. We welcome contributions of home made baked goods and your financial contributions to help us with expenses. We also need volunteers to make egg & tuna salad at Temple the day before Rosh HaShanah. If you will not be working during the day on September 29, please consider volunteering your time to that.

As a community we look forward to keeping this tradition going with your support. Please email Lynn Dobb (ldobb@columbus.rr.com) or Miriam Siegfried (mcsfried@sbcglobal.net) with what you are willing to contribute or for more information. All financial contributions can be made out to TBS and mailed to the temple Attention: Rosh HaShanah Kiddush. We look forward to starting the new year off on a sweet note as our temple family comes together on September 30!

Don't Forget...

  • Do Two Mitzvahs In One. As you are cleaning out for the next school year, remember you can use the recycling bin at the back of the TBS parking lot and help us earn some extra money for Temple projects. Save it up, and bring it here. We'll be happy to turn your trash into treasure.

  • The Gift Shop will be open on Sunday mornings from 10:15 a.m. until noon. Please call 855-4882 to set up an appointment if you need a time during the week. Special orders and Gift Register are always available by appointment.

Temple Beth Shalom Scrip Program

Scrip is a term that means "substitute money". When you purchase scrip, you're purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials—and with every purchase, you earn revenue for the Temple. Purchasing scrip is an easy fundraiser in which to participate. You contribute to the Temple by making regular household purchases you would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. Check with TBS Scrip Coordinator David Neubauer (253-7654) for the latest participating retailer list, or visit www.glscrip.com. Then put your shopping dollars to work for the Temple!

Friendly Faces Wanted!

Welcome back to the Shabbat Greeter program. We are looking for friendly faces to volunteer to hand out prayer books and welcome members for Friday night services. You can volunteer once or multiple times over the course of the year; whichever works best for you! Sign up with a friend or family member. This is an easy way to get involved and meet fellow congregation members. Please contact Lynn Dobb at ldobb@columbus.rr.com or 895-7917 or Trina Moffat at tmoffat@tbsohio.org or 855-4882 if you would like to participate. We look forward to seeing your friendly faces!
