Our Services and Social Events

Worship at Temple Beth Shalom

Religious Services on Sabbaths and Holidays combine the richness of our traditional and creative liturgical forms with singable and inspirational music, reflective of Judaism’s diversified heritage.

A mix of English and Hebrew (with transliterations) makes services accessible to all while preserving our historical linguistic roots. Rabbinic presentations fit the whole gamut of learning — from traditional interpretations of Torah applied to the contemporary scene to social and religious issues that affect our community. Music is a blend mostly of participatory singing, from both classical and modern composers, along with cantorial chanting. Several times a year, TBS’s adult choral group, the Sharyonim, leads prayers and makes musical presentations.

Erev Shabbat (Evening) Services are held throughout the year on Fridays at 8:00 pm, excepting the first Friday of each month (see “‘First Friday’ Family Program” below), and the third Friday of each month (starting at 6:15pm). Saturday Morning Services are held at 10:00 am in connection with lifecycle and special events. On other weeks, the Shabbat Morning Study Minyan meets at 10:30 am. A Youth and Family Service takes place on approximately every other Sunday during the religious school year. Special holiday services and celebrations follow the Jewish Calendar.

“First Friday” Family Program

On the first Friday evening of every month, services start a little earlier — at 6:15pm instead of 8:00pm. Services are conducted with a special theme underlying them, and then attendees adjourn to the Social Hall for a potluck dinner — some dishes are brought in, but most of it is provided by us. This is our First Friday program, an opportunity to add a little color to our regular Erev Shabbat services, and to introduce families that are interested in our Temple to it. Every month a new theme is selected, and activities are planned around it. Sometimes there will be special presentations during services. Sometimes we’ll have games during the dinner. It’s different every time!

If you would like to make a reservation for a First Friday service or have any questions about the program, call the Temple Office at 855-4882, or e-mail Lynn Tallan at ltallan@tbsohio.org. We hope to see you there!
